“20140302-20141005” by Wu Hao

Artist: Wu Hao
Date: Oct. 11 - Nov. 23, 2014 at Magician Space, Beijing
First solo exhibition with Wuhan-based artist Wu Hao. Through a different series of work, Wu Hao varies the level of formal decision-making, heightening the capacity of painting to gauge influences as ephemeral as temperature (social or meteorological), chance, and time, revealing a persistent inquiry into the fleeting and the permanent.
In his ongoing series ‘Watermarks’, paintings are created mixing colors of paint with water, pouring the liquid into wine glasses, and other vessels of differing shapes and sizes. The objects are then left until evaporation of water leaves behind a residue of pigment. In a previous iteration ‘Watermark Project’, these experiments were carried in Wuhan, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, revealing degradations of chromatic variation working in tandem with differing conditions of weather, heat and humidity unique to these cities. Taking this idea further, the artist taught participants in these cities principles of executing the work – enriching these records of time to include the input of anonymous individuals.
Another variation of ‘Watermarks’ will also be on display. Whereas ‘Watermark Project’ creates an index of commonplace items related to their encompassing topological environment, the latter experimentation is directed more closely by pre-determined factors established by the artist. Incorporating flat panels of transparent glass into the paint mixture, the correspondence between dimension and duration take on a more prominent role.

The Garden of Diversion ( Madein Company )

Exhibition period: November 2, 2013 – March 2, 2014

Curated by: Philippe Pirotte

Venue: Sifang Art Museum No. 9, Zhenqi Road, Pukou District, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China

On the occasion of The Garden of Diversion, Sifang Art Museum inaugural exhibition curated by Philippe Pirotte, MadeIn Company is proud to present Movement Field by Xu Zhen. The garden and its revolutionary paths covers an area of more than 4,000 sqm.The opening exhibition at the Sifang Art Museum designed by Steven Holl Architects re-considers the utopian tradition of philosophical gardens in China. Within this evinced context the exhibition connects a variety of subject mater, such as the meaning of monuments and folly gardens, or the body, hedonism and experience economy.

The exhibition will include works made especially for the occasion by acclaimed international artists such as He An, Gabriel Lester and MadeIn Company / Xu Zhen, and emerging Nanjing-based artist Li Jingxiong.

Next to these site-specific works, the exhibition features works on loan and from the permanent collection of the Sifang Art Museum by important international artists like Olafur Eliasson, Liang Wei, Yutaka Sone, Danh Vo, Duan Jianyu, Marlene Dumas, Kan Xuan, Anselm Kiefer, Mao Yan, Lucy Raven, Luc Tuymans, Yang Fudong, Zhang Enli, Zhou Chunya, Zhang Peili etc.
